Creativity by mihaly csikszentmihalyi5/13/2023 Nowadays if one does not make some money (however pitifully little) out of writing, it’s considered to be a waste of time. Not so long ago, it was acceptable to be an amateur poet…. As psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi put it: The word suggests that those who don’t work as “Creatives” have no business in the area of creativity. The term lumps all working artists together, as though their work were interchangeable deliverables measured in billable hours. Anyone who does creative work may be labeled a “Creative” ( used as a noun) at some point in their career. The current focus on creativity isn’t always a net positive. There may be as many best-selling books on creativity as there are on dieting or relationships. Or, at least, we continue to be fascinated by creativity now more than ever, it seems. Nonetheless, humans continue to create things. Despite decades of research, scientists still know little about the source of creativity.

The alloy of law5/13/2023 The first time I attempted reading The Alloy of Law, I was worried. And that notion is proven once again as I found myself continuously captivated by The Alloy of Law on my reread. Whether it’s the first era or the second era, the world of Scadrial feels like home to me. More Mistborn is always a good thing for me. The Alloy of Law the first book in Mistborn: Wax and Wayne series, a series that started as a side project, but eventually turned into the official second era of Mistborn Saga. I’ve never written a proper review for it, and now that I finished my reread of the novel, I might as well do it now. It has been almost six years since I first read The Alloy of Law for the first time in 2016. It’s in how they make use of what life has shown them.” “The measure of a person is not how much they have lived. The Alloy of Law is an immensely enjoyable start to the second era of Mistborn Saga by Brandon Sanderson. Published: 8th November 2011 by Tor Books (US) & 10th November 2011 by Gollancz (UK) Pages: 392 pages (Mass Market Paperback Edition) Series: Mistborn: Wax and Wayne (Book #1 of 4), Mistborn Saga (Book #4 of 7)

The frog princess book series5/13/2023 The only thing I knew about this going in was that the first book was a retelling of The Frog Prince, and that Disney had used it as the story inspiration for The Princess and The Frog. However, neither of those facts is particularly useful! The film is a VERY loose adaptation, using only the plot point that kissing a frog turns the princess into a frog too. Ownership: Paperback, secondhand from Amazon Marketplace. That turned out to be the third omnibus in the series, so of course, since I can’t start midway through a series, I had to search out the other two volumes on the internet when I got home! This first omnibus has The Frog Princess, Dragon’s Breath and Once Upon a Curse.īook: The Frog Princess Omnibus by E. I was browsing in The Last Bookshop in Oxford, which has an excellent 2 for £5 deal, when I spotted a cool looking purple book with a dragon on it.

Pull of the stars book5/13/2023 (Bantam, 480 pp., $18.) “It’s nice to return to the courtroom with someone we trust,” is how our reviewer, Sarah Lyall, greeted this third Grisham novel to feature Jake Brigance, a small-town Mississippi lawyer “specializing in unpopular, seemingly unwinnable cases.” He first appeared in “A Time to Kill.” Here he’s defending a 16-year-old boy whose “excellent reasons for committing murder” don’t change the fact that he’s guilty. While the title is a translation of “influenza delle stelle,” from which the disease got its name, the author pins her characters’ suffering on society.Ī TIME FOR MERCY, by John Grisham. (Back Bay, 320 pp., $16.99.) Like Donoghue’s “Room,” this “arresting” page-turner, as our reviewer, Karen Thompson Walker, called it, set in the “fever/maternity” ward of a Dublin hospital during the 1918 flu epidemic, focuses on one space. (Scribner, 352 pp., $18.) Stanley’s discovery of a 19th-century letter from a Buddhist priest’s daughter who fled her family’s rural village for the city that would soon become Tokyo was the genesis for this 2020 biography, which won the National Book Critics Circle and PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld awards. Everless summary5/13/2023 This is author Sara Holland’s debut novel and although, this is not a spectacular debut it does shine in some parts. The prologue is intriguing and hooks readers right away. Review: Everless is another YA Fantasy read and of course, my first book in September! This book introduces us to a mythical land where blood is time and time is money. Her decisions have the power to change her fate-and the fate of time itself. Soon she’s caught in a tangle of violent secrets and finds her heart torn between two people she thought she’d never see again. When Jules discovers that her father is dying, she knows that she must return to Everless to earn more time for him before she loses him forever.īut going back to Everless brings more danger-and temptation-than Jules could have ever imagined. A decade ago, she and her father were servants at Everless, the Gerlings’ palatial estate, until a fateful accident forced them to flee in the dead of night. No one resents the Gerlings more than Jules Ember. The rich aristocracy, like the Gerlings, tax the poor to the hilt, extending their own lives by centuries. Synopsis: In the kingdom of Sempera, time is currency-extracted from blood, bound to iron, and consumed to add time to one’s own lifespan. Fans of Victoria Aveyard, Kendare Blake, and Stephanie Garber will devour this lush novel’s breathtaking action, incredible romance, and dangerous secrets.

Orangutan by Rita Goldner5/13/2023 Orang-utan lives in the canopy in the tropical rainforest. Understanding how they live now will help us protect them. While the environment shown is pristine, these creatures are severely threatened by the destruction of the forest. I'm glad I read this book on International Orangutan Day and I can heartily recommend it to anyone considering a book for young children. The story is not long and a young reader can flick through it in ten minutes or so, but by paying attention to the words they will easily learn the meaning of terms like canopy, vine, frugivore - as well as bellyflop! We understand that they all depend on the wild jungle for their living and by eating differently they can share the space. I especially enjoy that we see the whole colourful habitat, with the other animals and birds that inhabit the forest. We follow young Orangutan as he lives with his mother in the canopy, licking the rain off his fur, finding durian and figs to eat, making comfy nests to sleep in and evading the odd predator. What a beautiful book! I can't express how much I admire the art and writing which has brought this rainforest into my room.

Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood5/13/2023 Wasn’t it just going to be another pathetic paranormal romance? Filled with overused tropes and lacking in plot? When I first started it I questioned why I was reading it. For the delay? I don’t even know what I’m saying any more. I have all these notes and it’s not even hard. Okay so I tried to update, but I don’t know why it takes me so long. And if their secret is discovered by the priests of the Brotherhood, it would mean an asylum, a prison ship – or an early grave. But the truth is even worse: they’re witches. Too pretty, too reclusive, and far too educated for their own good. Everybody knows Cate Cahill and her sisters are eccentric. |
