The fifth elephant by terry pratchett5/12/2023 ![]() It's up to the dauntless Vimes - bothered as usual by a familiar cast of Discworld inhabitants (you know, trolls, dwarfs, werewolves, vampires and such) - to solve the puzzle of the missing pachyderm. But you do need a certain inclination in that direction. The Fifth Elephant Discworld They say that diplomacy is a gentle art. And that mastering it is a lifetime's work. An attempted assassination and a theft soon lead to a desperate chase from the low halls of Discworld royalty to the legendary fat mines of Uberwald, where lard is found in underground seams along with tusks and teeth and other precious ivory artifacts. That its finest practitioners are subtle, sophisticated individuals for whom nuance and subtext are meat and drink. Of course where cops (even those clad in tights) go, alas, crime follows. The wrong highlander5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() The woman smiled and nodded as she flew by and Donnan returned his gaze to Conran. “Good,” Donnan said, relaxing slightly and glancing around before gesturing at a passing servant. “He is no’ out o’ the woods yet, but his fever has gone down quite a bit.” “Better,” he said finally, realizing the soldier was still awaiting an answer. But this man had said and done a couple things while they’d worked at cooling down Fearghas last night that had made Conran think he might be an exception to that rule. ![]() ![]() Men of this soldier’s size generally didn’t have smarts to go along with their brawn. Women in Sport by Rachel Ignotofsky5/12/2023 ![]() Women in Sports focuses on women in athletics around the globe. ![]() I learned about so many amazing women in the STEM field that were new to me. I was so psyched to read this book after reading Ignotofsky’s first book Women in Science. The book also contains infographics about relevant topics such as muscle anatomy, a timeline of women’s participation in sports, statistics about women in athletics, and influential female teams. A fascinating collection full of striking, singular art, Women in Sports features 50 profiles and illustrated portraits of women athletes from the 1800s to today including trailblazers, Olympians, and record-breakers in more than 40 different sports. Keeping girls interested in sports has never been more important: research suggests that girls who play sports get better grades and have higher self-esteem–but girls are six times more likely to quit playing sports than boys and are unlikely to see female athlete role models in the media. Women in Sports highlights notable women’s contributions to competitive athletics to inspire readers young and old. The Five by Robert McCammon5/11/2023 ![]() And now here came the fucking waitress again, her third swoop past in as many minutes. His sunglasses helped a little, but underneath them his eyes were tired. Everything was yellow and red and the sun was blasting between the blinds of the east-facing windows. Everything was too bright for him in here. He was a musician.īesides, he wasn't worth a damn before noon, and here he was at ten in the morning sitting in a booth at a Denny's restaurant just off I-35 at Round Rock, about twenty miles north of Austin. He wasn't a particularly good guy, nor a very bad one. ![]() His neck was going to grow six feet long and spikes would shoot out of his arms before he tore the room apart. But it would have to be done soon, because in another minute he was going to go off like that dude in The Thing whose alien blood bubbled and shrieked under the touch of a hot wire. ![]() Nomad decided he would have to kill the waitress. ![]()

The man in the brown suit5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() But when she witnesses a man fall to his death on the tracks of the Hyde Park Tube Station and another man in a brown suit ransack his pockets, dropping a note in his flight, she is certain there is something nefarious afoot. With the death of her father, Anne Beddingfeld is determined to escape the boredom of being deposited with relatives and to seek adventure. ![]() Personally, I thought the story was delightful, a page turner from beginning to end. Some bawled for the return of Hercule Poirot while others admired her entertaining execution. With it, she deviated from a pure detective novel, bleeding into the genre of a thriller which pleased some critics and dismayed others. The Man in the Brown Suit was Agatha Christie’s fifth novel published by Bodley Head, her contract of six books almost satisfied. Written at: during a trip to South Africa, etc. Setting: Marlow, London, Southampton, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Bulawayo, island in the Zambezi ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() According to Zuboff, this new wave capitalism is not content to commoditize our experiences, but seeks also to control and direct or behavior by channeling those experiences through predictive analytics. In her new book on Surveillance Capitalism, Harvard Business School emeritus professor Shoshana Zuboff introduces us to a new wave of modernity, equally disruptive, but uniquely difficult to overcome. Ultimately it had to be institutionalized in the post war order ( Kalleberg 2011). This reaction emerged spontaneously at the local and national level. Polanyi’s (2001) “double movement” brought a new stability after decades of strife. Durkheim (1964), Marx (1992) and Weber (1978) each had a take on the disruption created by early capitalism. The foundation of sociology coincides with the uprooting of traditional society during the emergence of industrial capitalism. ![]() |
