Julián Is a Mermaid by Jessica Love5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() "Let's join them." Love's deep empathy for her characters and her keen-eyed observations of urban life come together in a story of love, understanding, and embracing the mermaid within us all. Love lets an anxious beat pass before Abuela takes Julián by the hand, leading him to what some readers may recognize as the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. Though it could easily feel preachy, this charmingly subversive tale instead offers a simple yet powerful story of the importance of being seen and affirmed. ![]() ![]() Refreshingly, Spanish words aren't italicized. A heartwarming must-have for one-on-one and small group sharing. Love couples the spare narrative with vivid, imaginative, and breathtaking illustrations. This is Jessica Love's debut picture book, and every choice she makes - the spare text, a color palette both muted and lively, full-bleed pages that make even subway cars and apartment rooms feel as expansive as the ocean - imbues the story with charm, tenderness and humor.Alongside Julián, readers learn that anyone can be a mermaid: All it takes is love and acceptance, a little imagination and a big swishy tail. ![]()

Daniel walker howe what hath god wrought5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Maps, illustrations, notes, bibliographical essay, index. Supported by engaging prose, Howe’s achievement will surely be seen as one of the most outstanding syntheses of U.S. What Hath God Wrought: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848. Howe dodges some of the shibboleths of historical literature, for example, refusing to describe these decades as representing a “market revolution” because a market economy already existed in 18th-century America. Howe also charts developments in literature, focusing not just on Thoreau and Poe but on such forgotten writers as William Gilmore Simms of South Carolina, who “helped create the romantic image of the Old South,” but whose proslavery views eventually brought his work into disrepute. A panoramic narrative, What Hath God Wrought portrays revolutionary improvements in transportation and communications that accelerated the extension of the American empire. Smaller but no less important stories run through the account: New York’s gradual emancipation of slaves the growth of higher education the rise of the temperance movement (all classes, even ministers, imbibed heavily, Howe says). history-a time of territorial growth, religious revival, booming industrialization, a recalibrating of American democracy and the rise of nationalist sentiment. ![]() ), stylishly narrates a crucial period in U.S. In the latest installment in the Oxford History of the United States series, historian Howe, professor emeritus at Oxford University and UCLA ( The Political Culture of the American Whigs ![]()

ჯანქი by William S. Burroughs5/10/2023 ![]() Here as well, for the first time, are Burroughs' own unpublished introduction and an entire omitted chapter, along with many "lost" passages, as well as auxiliary texts by Allen Ginsberg and others. ![]() ![]() For this fiftieth-anniversary edition, eminent Burroughs scholar Oliver Harris has painstakingly recreated the author's original text, word by word, from archival typescripts and places the book's contents against a lively historical background in a comprehensive introduction. Unafraid to portray himself in 1953 as a confirmed member of two socially-despised under classes (a narcotics addict and a homosexual), Burroughs was writing as a trained anthropologist when he unapologetically described a way of life - in New York, New Orleans, and Mexico City - that by the 1940's was already demonized by the artificial anti-drug hysteria of an opportunistic bureaucracy and a cynical, prostrate media. It is a candid eye-witness account of times and places that are now long gone, an unvarnished field report from the American post-war underground. Before his 1959 breakthrough, Naked Lunch, an unknown William S. ![]()

The Coldest Winter by David Halberstam5/10/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() In Washington President Harry Truman and his top advisers debated the enemy's intentions. Every bit of news from the battlefield was negative. In the early weeks of the invasion, the Communist offensive was a stunning success. Some six months earlier, Secretary of State Dean Acheson, in a colossal gaffe, had neglected to include South Korea in America's Asian defense perimeter, and the only American forces then in the country, part of a tiny advisory mission, were almost completely unprepared for the attack. On June 25, 1950, nearly seven divisions of elite North Korean troops, many of whom had fought for the Communist side in the Chinese civil war, crossed the border into South Korea, with the intention of conquering the entire South in three weeks. ![]()

Control by lydia kang5/9/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() This gives us readers, an opportunity to explore the rest of the world that Kang has created. Thankfully, Catalyst made it incredibly effortless to jump right back into the world Kang has created.Ĭatalyst takes place a year after the events of Control and I love that it immediately gets into the action and adventure as the characters are once again forced to be on the run and to separate from each other. Going into Catalyst, I was slightly worried since it has been awhile since I read Control. And even though it wasn’t the type of novel that I usually gravitated towards, I did enjoy it exceedingly. It’s been two years since Lydia Kang’s debut novel Control, a sci-fi story with its compelling take on genetics came out. Received from publisher in exchange for an honest review. ![]() |
